Travel Tuesday: Solo Traveling Tips

Solo traveling is an amazing way to explore the world and can be a great adventure. Diving into the world of solo traveling can feel terrifying and intimidating when just getting started, but it is one of the most liberating experiences I have had.

I was raised by traditional parents who nearly lost it when I started traveling alone. They didn't understand it, they didn't think it was safe, and I’m pretty sure my dads echoes of “WHAT IF SOMETHING HAPPENS” will live in my mind forever.

Traveling for me has always felt like a VIP ticket to connecting with God. My time solo traveling is like a never ending date with God. I know God meets me in nature, so when I embark on vacations and solo experiences, I tend to choose activities that I know will be spiritually nourishing for me in addition to being fun or adventurous. I have spent time sitting with God talking at rivers, oceans, and even on mountain tops, but regardless of where I am, I know there is an opportunity to draw closer to God on my trip.

Solo travel as a black woman can be an empowering and enriching experience, but it can also come with its own set of challenges and considerations.

One thing to keep in mind is the potential for racial discrimination or profiling. It's important to research your destination and be aware of any potential biases that may exist, and to have a plan in place for handling any uncomfortable or unsafe situations that may arise.

It can also be helpful to seek out resources specifically tailored towards black travelers, such as social media groups or travel organizations. These communities can provide valuable support and information, as well as connect you with other travelers who may have similar experiences and concerns.

If you are considering embarking on the solo travel lifestyle, or just want to set out to take a solo trip for a quick weekend getaway. I have outlined the key things you need to know take your first solo trip with confidence. This Travel Tuesday consider these 9 Tips for Solo Traveling when booking your trip:

  • Research: Before you start your trip, make sure you research the places you plan to visit and any special rules you will need to follow in each destination.

  • Make copies of important documents: It's always a good idea to have copies of your passport, driver's license, and other important documents in case of an emergency.

  • Keep an Open Mind: Try to stay open-minded, as this will help you make the most of your journey and take in all the new experiences.

  • Get Local: When you arrive at your destination, try to get to know the locals and learn as much as you can about the culture. This will give you a richer and more meaningful experience.

  • Stay Connected: Make sure you stay connected with friends and family back home, so you can stay safe and share your experiences with them. Let someone know your plans. It's important to let a trusted friend or family member know your travel plans, including where you'll be staying and how to contact you.

  • Plan Enough Time: Give yourself plenty of time to explore and enjoy the places you visit. Don’t rush through your trip, as you’ll miss out on the beauty of each destination.

  • Be open to new experiences: Solo travel is all about stepping out of your comfort zone and trying new things. Don't be afraid to strike up a conversation with a stranger or try a new activity.

  • Stay Flexible: Don’t plan every detail of your trip, as this can take away from the spontaneity and flexibility. Leave room for surprises and unexpected experiences.

  • Take Care of Yourself: Make sure you take care of yourself while traveling, by eating healthy, getting enough sleep, and taking breaks when you need them.

Finally, don't be afraid to embrace your identity and culture while traveling. Solo travel is an opportunity to get to know yourself and God on a deeper level. It is also an opportunity to celebrate and share with others.

Solo travel can be a rewarding and empowering experience. It allows you to be completely in control of your itinerary, explore new places at your own pace, and get to know yourself in a way that's often difficult to do when you're with other people. Solo travel also requires a certain amount of bravery and independence, as you'll be responsible for your own safety and well-being in a new place. But with a little bit of planning and preparation, solo travel can be a fun and memorable adventure.

Overall, solo travel as a black woman can be a rewarding and enriching experience with a little bit of planning and preparation. Don't let the potential for challenges deter you from pursuing your travel dreams – with the right mindset and resources, you can have a safe and meaningful adventure.
